Adios TC Alfred
In the early hours of Saturday morning Tropical Cyclone Alfred made a fleeting visit to our area and then left as quickly as it arrived, sparing our motel from any damage. It was a tense and dramatic week leading up to the event, with news outlets covering every minute of the impending cyclone’s progress. For us, it was a time filled with anticipation, preparation, and a little bit of anxiety. But today, we’re relieved, grateful, and ready to welcome guests again.
All week, the media coverage was hard to miss. The warnings were constant, and images of the damage being caused by king tides and some of the biggest waves the Sunshine Coast has seen in years kept us all on edge. We watched in disbelief as reckless swimmers endangered their own lives and the lives of rescuers, while local stores saw panic-buying that stripped shelves bare of essentials.
People were bracing for the worst. Some queued for hours to fill sandbags, hoping to protect their homes, while others huddled together in the safety of their own homes. There was a real sense of uncertainty hanging in the air. Would we see severe damage? Would the cyclone make landfall near us? These were the questions on everyone’s mind as the storm approached.
Thankfully, for Maleny and our motel, the worst seems to be over. Cyclone Alfred passed by, just skimming our region, and left us unscathed. While the winds picked up and the skies darkened, the storm quickly dissipated, and the damage was minimal. We couldn’t have asked for a better outcome, and we’re incredibly grateful that our property and the surrounding area were spared.
As soon as the cyclone passed, we got to work putting everything back in place. Our outdoor furniture, which had been moved for safety, is now neatly arranged and ready for our next guests to enjoy. Any debris was cleared, and the safety measures we had in place were removed to restore the peaceful atmosphere we love.
Today, the calm after the storm is evident. There’s a gentle rain watering our garden, a stark contrast to the powerful winds we experienced just hours before. It’s a reminder of how beautiful and gentle nature can be when it chooses to be. The garden looks lush and vibrant, and we can’t help but appreciate the simplicity of a gentle rain after such a tumultuous week.
